The Show Must Go On!

August 3rd, 2011 | No Comments

A little bad news hit today. For some obvious reasons, Creations Entertainment, the folks who put on the Star Trek Las Vegas event, will not allow me to stream video live from inside the convention. I completely understand their position, and they were very nice to me about the fact I even asked in the first place.

However, if I take a step outside of the convention area, I can broadcast. So, though it won’t be as colorful as I desire, I can still broadcast live on Friday, August 12th. I just won’t be doing it from the dealer’s room, which was my original intention.

I still hope to interview a number of people. I have not heard back yet from Rod Roddenberry’s people. I know they wanted me to help show off some of their items for sale, which I may not be able to do live due to that restriction I mentioned above. I am still hoping, though, to interview the Roddenberry.com product manage, Chief Operating Officer, and Rod Roddenberry himself over the course of the day. I also plan to interview Twitter people such as @startrekcore, who convinced with a viral marketing campaign Jim Beam to pay for his convention attendance; Mary @televixen Czerwinski who is attempting to get into the next Star Trek movie as Dr Elizabeth Dehner via http://www.makemedehner.com; one of the convention organizers for NeonCon, Las Vegas’s own gaming convention; as well as a number of others who worked at the Star Trek Experience, cosplay, or any other number of things.

Except for Rod Roddenberry, you notice a lack of stars who will be at the convention on my interview list. Again, they are there as guests of Creation Entertainment so unless I catch them outside of the convention, I doubt I will get too many bites.

This all changes next year, when I get press credentialed. Yes, that will be happening. It is a disadvantage to not have the credentials this year, but Main Event Gaming Network will expand to a point where we will have credentialed reporters at various events such as E3, PAX, and San Diego Comic Con.

Star Trek Las Vegas Broadcasting

July 25th, 2011 | No Comments

On August 12, I will be in Las Vegas attending the Star Trek convention at the Rio. While I am there, Main Event Gaming Network will be providing a 24 hour marathon of various video games based on Las Vegas broadcast over Justin.tv.

My intent is to be able to interview people live from Las Vegas during the time. Right now, I am attempting to find the best way to do this. The last option is so far the only one that has seriously worked, which is using a laptop computer with a Microsoft LiveCam attached to it. I have attempted using the Justin.tv iPhone app to broadcast, but it cannot hold onto the network over 3G at this time. If the wireless at the Rio holds up, it may work but I am testing that with my home network.

My next option may be purchasing a netbook computer that has a built-in camera. I am not sure about this as I doubt the netbook will have as good of a camera as either my iPhone or my LiveCam.

Irregardless, I will find a way to broadcast. I hope to be able to interview a number of people live and have people on the Justin.tv cast ask questions. This is citizen journalism in its raw form, and I am really looking forward to this.

If this works out, we will be refining the process and hope to bring reports back from all sorts of other conventions around the world with interest to the video game playing community.

Make Mary Dehner!

July 19th, 2011 | 3 Comments

Dr. Elizabeth Dehner had only a short run on the original Star Trek show. Her character was ascended to godhood against her will, but she was one of the most accomplished of the female officers on the USS Enterprise. Unlike Nurse Chapel, Dr. Dehner was a full doctor, only Dr McCoy ranked above her in the medical staff. It is a ‘minor’ character I agree should be brought back for the new J J Abrams vision of Star Trek.

My good friend Mary Czerwinski agrees. Mary has decided to take up the campaign of bringing back Dehner for the Abrams vision Star Trek. Mary, who has done some acting as well as hosts for a number of podcasts including DVDGeeks.tv, is almost a dead ringer for the original actress of Dehner. It is a very logical step for Mary to take the role in the latest Star Trek movie to be made, and continue to role into the future.

http://www.makemedehner.com is her attempt to get the attention of J J Abrams and the others involved in the Star Trek movie to recognize and cast her in the role. I fully support Mary and want her to succeed in what would be her finest hour.

Best Laid Plans…

April 7th, 2011 | No Comments

Yep. I was going to make a lot of podcasts, make a number of blog posts, keep everything moving. Yep, that was my plans.

Well, you can see how well that all went.

It was not from a lack of desire, it was from a lack of time. Too many things occupy my free time these days, but at least one of those things will be coming to fruition in hopefully about a month or so. I have been asked to clean up another website for a couple of fellow science fiction fans. Once I get a couple of things resolved, we should be seeing a more comprehensive website from them.

In three weeks, another project may actually be ready to go. I plan on doing testing before that point, though. That will be, not a podcast, but a channel on Justin.tv where I can broadcast my video game playing in their gaming channels. I’m hoping I have that up and going soon.

In the meantime, you may be able to catch me in a number of places:

Alert! – Incoming Podcasts!

January 4th, 2011 | One Comment

Yes, I am about to get into podcasting. I know so many people who do it, plus with my experience already with the medium, I’ve decided to plunge into the world of the podcast.

What I am going to podcast about? First and foremost, Doctor Who. Specifically, though, I’m going to podcast on the historical references within Doctor Who. As a history buff, seeing the historical episodes are the most interesting shows because of how the Doctor deals with events that have already occurred.

In addition to the Doctor, though, it is obvious I’m going to talk Star Trek every so often as well. I love Klingons, specifically, so will probably focus on the Klingon presence rumored in the next Star Trek movie.

I will also be talking MMOs and roleplaying in general. I’ve been roleplaying since 1978, been in multiplayer online games since 1991.

The Podcast’s name will be Genius, Strength, Cunning! Yes, I decided to use the name of this blog as the name of the podcast, and the links and podcast information will be posted here. I’ll be adding other resources as well, perhaps a forum and other options.

At the start, I’m doing this podcast alone. That may change quickly. Also, I may hook into another network I have ties with depending on my success or failure.

So, wish me luck on this endeavor!

What’s Stopping Gene’s Vision?

February 17th, 2010 | No Comments

On my political blog, I’ve made more than one posting about how Star Trek relates to the current administration. But, it brought me back to thinking of a more Trek-oriented question and commentary, instead of political, more relevant to this site.

What, exactly, is preventing us from achieving the vision set out by Gene Roddenberry in Star Trek?

Now, I’ve seen a number of commentaries by numerous people concerning this topic. Invariably, though, it degenerates into discussions about psychology. Some point to our adherence to religious beliefs. Gene, many of you know, called himself agnostic. His son, Rod, is more atheist from my understanding. Christianity, Islam, Hindu, etc. religions do have issues when confronted with science, as do all sorts of other belief systems. I, personally, am one of those labeled a ‘quack’ as I’m firmly in the ‘Intelligent Design’ camp on this – and honestly, since Star Trek the Next Generation did an entire episode about progenitors seeding all the various races in Star Trek so a majority of them are bipedal humanoids, I think if the theory was out back when he was alive, Gene may have endorsed it as well.

But, it all comes down to my take: religion is not what’s holding us back in general. Religious scholars have contributed to our progress. It was an Islamic scholar who introduced the concept of a zero, for example. How far have we come just because of that inclusion? If you doubt that statement, let me continue the path. Zero developed into the concept of negative numbers. Negative numbers eventually developed into imaginary numbers (taking the square roots of negative numbers). Without imaginary numbers, we would have missed hitting the moon with the Apollo program. Religion is a road block in some cases, yes, but it is not what is preventing the vision.

Next thing that is normally brought up is money – our greed is what is holding us back. We are too fixated on making a buck than progressing. Except, that does not hold up under even mild scrutiny. Almost every major industrial innovation has occurred because someone wanted to build a better mousetrap, and not out of the goodness of their heart. Marconi, Bell, Edison, etc. were all looking for funding from either contracts or other sources with every invention they made. Even Einstein and other scientists are looking for grants, so they may continue research.

But I feel you are heading down the right path with money being the problem. You just are not basic enough. Why did monetary systems come about in the first place? What makes gold so precious, and worth so much? Scarcity. It is the lack of resources that makes something more valuable. Money is just a numeric expression of just how valuable people feel an item is worth. As I type this, I’m eating a meal that cost around $7.50. Star Trek Online lifetime membership is $250. So, the people who end up setting their prices feel STO is 33 1/3 times more worth the cost of this meal I’m chowing down.

But let’s take it even one step further. Why is money not an issue until the Ferengi show up on Star Trek the Next Generation? It comes down to the unlimited resource generator equipped everywhere, the replicator. Anything anyone wants can be replicated, so if you want a fancy dress, you just tell the computer to make you one. This changes when the Ferengi and their latinum arrive, as latinum cannot be replicated. Suddenly, there is an item that can be scarce and now we’re back to a currency system based on that item.

No hunger, unlimited medicines, no need to hoard items creates the utopia envisioned by Gene Roddenberry.

I’m going to take it one last step, though. Really, the thing that makes this all possible is the replicator takes energy and forms whatever a person needs. The replicator needs power, as does the ship to move, the living quarters to stay at a comfortable temperature, and all the other things needed to sustain a happy existence. It is unlimited amounts of energy that can produce Gene Roddenberry’s utopian vision. Right now, though, there is no such thing as unlimited power. We cannot develop the replicator, the warp drive, control the climate, or anything else without that unlimited supply. In Star Trek, they had dilithium crystals, which since they could be ‘grown’, became that power source. There is nothing like that on Earth we can exploit to provide such a thing.

Unfortunately, there are some in the community, and in the halls of government, who just do not understand this final point. However, in their attempts to make an utopia, our basic rights are trampled into the ground. Our money, which we have to use to purchase those resources to survive, is devalued, taken from us, and wasted. Only one place exists where an unlimited power source can be found, and even that exploration is being curtailed.

Martok, Me, and Gowron

I went to the Star Trek Las Vegas convention back in August. I had such a fun time, and next year I’m going to save up for the Klingon feast, as I could not afford it this time.

However, I was able to afford the picture with Gowron and Martok.
