Haukea was born of a very poor family, who came to the New Orleans area after the Katrina flood in order to find construction jobs. With the rebuilding of New Market, the influx of wealth has corrupted Haukea to its many splendors. It is not uncommon to see Haukea even at council meetings with multiple rings, necklaces, and expensive clothing. Though she does help her district, which keeps her elected, it is the side benefits that keep her motivated.
